Patient Discovery is a set of tools that allow a server to find a patient on other servers, regardless of if the patient has the same patient ID or not. It performs a search for the patient based on a set of criteria established for querying that server. For example, it could look for a match based on patient last name, birth date and sex. So, the patients do not have to have the same IDs. There just must be a trust relationship established between the owners of the servers. Using DICOM, the imaging studies can be found and retrieved. Additional patient information, such as the CCR, can be retrieved with the optional implementation of an NHIN Gateway.
